The Village Green Stompers Jazz Band has been in existence for over 20 years. It is well known in Kent, Sussex and South London but plays all over the country – at London hotels, Cambridge May Balls, and particularly for weddings, anniversaries and birthday parties. The band also helps at various festivals, carnivals and at fêtes – and occasionally performs spirituals in churches or gives a cheerful illustrated history of traditional jazz. The band also accompanied the renowned Jiving Lindy Hoppers at a performance which was recorded for the National Dance Archive.
THE VILLAGE GREEN STOMPERS - OUT STANDING IN THEIR FIELD!
The band consists of the normal New Orleans type of line up - trumpet, trombone, clarinet/saxophone, piano, guitar/banjo, bass/sousaphone and drums. All the musicians have been playing for many years and the band has a wide repertoire of cheerful music that is guaranteed to get the audience dancing, where appropriate.
The range of music is wide - at least 800 tunes to choose from - albeit all played in a New Orleans traditional jazz style. All the old jazz marches and rags, ‘Bourbon Street Parade’, ‘Tiger Rag’ and so on; the well-known blues – ‘St. Louis Blues’ and ‘Careless Love’ plus many of the lesser known ones; all are mixed in with the tunes everybody knows - ‘Bill Bailey’, ‘Chicago’, ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band’, ‘Summertime’ and ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’’, for example. At weddings we are sometimes asked for an opening waltz; at Golden Weddings or Christmas Parties there is just as likely to be ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ or a Charleston. At garden parties or other suitable occasions the band can march round amongst the guests. The band has also played at some very moving funerals. We play good rock and roll – ‘Blueberry Hill’ or ‘Hound Dog’ – and there is lots of cheerful singing.
Guaranteed to provide the right mood, with friendly lively music that appeals across all the generations.
